Consumers 'should review home insurance at Christmas'

Consumers should review their home contents insurance at Christmas to ensure it covers items bought as gifts for friends and family, according to Direct Line.

The insurance company's home insurance head, Andrew Lowe, said some expensive items over £1,500 may need to be added or specified separately in policies, so it is best to check the issue with an insurer.

He added that students should also take care when leaving their university accommodation for the festive period, as such properties are "ideal targets" for thieves.

"It is a good idea for students to take valuable/expensive items home with them over the Christmas period, wherever possible," he explained.

"It is also important to make sure that adequate insurance [is] in place."

Recent research by Liverpool Victoria claimed that 68 per cent of households in the UK leave TVs and other expensive items on display, leaving them particularly vulnerable to burglary.

The study also found that an average of £35,000-worth of home contents is visible from outside a quarter of a million households in the UK.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18381634-ADNFCR
